We’re occasionally asked if we teach kids fly fishing. The answer is: maybe—it depends on a few key factors.

If the accompanying adult is also a beginner and wants to learn alongside the child, it can sometimes be a good fit. But in our experience, trying to meet the needs of both adult learners and children in the same session tends to water down the value for everyone.

Children under 12 often have limited attention spans, and while casting is what most people associate with fly fishing, it’s just one piece of what our beginner class covers. Since the full experience involves much more, it’s typically not the best match for younger kids.

Practically speaking, all of our gear—rods, waders, and so on—is adult-sized, which makes it harder to accommodate younger participants effectively. That’s why we’re especially glad to welcome older kids and teenagers (ideally 18+), who tend to have more patience and the physical size for the gear.

As a parent of four myself, I know the “patience” part might be wishful thinking—but our insurance provider definitely prefers it too, given the nature of the rivers we wade.
